Creation in June, 7th & 8th 2024 in Paris, Place Maubert
A comission by Paris Dance Project (Benjamin Millepied)For the event « La Ville Dansée »
"La Ville Dansée" celebrates dance in the urban space, the encounter between dance and history, between dancers and places rich of little-known stories.
H? nh?y múa dancing H? an indepen dance is a performance for three performers centered around the figure of Ho Chi Minh in an emblematic location, Place Maubert.
"How can we demonstrate the driving force of a young Vietnamese exile who arrived in France in the 3rd class holds of a liner traveling from Saïgon to Marseille in 1911? Expressing its power of movement, of learning, of avoidance – its way of circumventing, of convincing, of bringing together to achieve its ends? After arriving in Europe, Hô Chi Minh will no longer stop traveling, crossing countries where he tries to understand the emancipation projects at work in the United States as well as in Africa, Russia, China and Thailand. … He would only see his country, Vietnam, 30 years later.
Hô chi Minh in Paris (1911-1913 then 1919-1923) is sculling, slalom, avoidance: a thirst for multiple learning – languages, professions, knowledge; an accumulation of identities, names, addresses, of the collective too! What does this frail body rely on to put in place such a personal program, which will then allow it to guide others?
I would like to try – with bodies where the trace of exile is inscribed – to draw this regime of independent dance that Hô Chi Minh stubbornly constructed; built in his body in contact with the Viet communities of France and the intellectuals he met. I will inscribe the corporeality of this independent dance on the very places of his stay – Place Maubert, place of convergence of the different atmospheres of the Paris he crossed: la rive droite (Bastille), the Seine, the Montagne Sainte Geneviève .
A dance like a course, a perspective and an evasion too, whose foundations, the feet, are powerfully settled where they are.
A dance to demonstrate the history and geography inscribed in a body-world – in love with emancipation – and in the architecture of a city.
